Brookfield
Brookfield can be divided into four distinct areas, each with a character of its own. The eastern portion of town bordering Lake Lillinonah is known as the historic district. It features colonial architecture and large land lots. The western side of town caresses the shores of Candlewood Lake and is a very peaceful community of renovated and remodeled cottages. The center of town, divided by Route 7 and the Still River Valley, has developed into the central business district. The southern tip of Brookfield borders Danbury and local residents refer to this area as the “Million Dollar Mile.” The nickname is befitting because this stretch of land is home to many national franchises such as Pizza Hut, Wendy’s, Burger King, McDonald’s and superstores such as Costco, Circuit City, OfficeMax, T.J. Maxx, Stew Leonard’s, Home Depot, Shop-Rite and Kohl’s. By contrast, the northern half of town is home to many local professionals, restaurants and retailers including Brookfield Market, Brookfield Hardware, Brookfield Pharmacy, Brookfield Information Center and the Brookfield Craft Center.

Much of the old New England style architecture is still apparent and the Economic Development Committee’s top priority is to return and restore a New England village theme to the area. Brookfield’s largest area of growth in the next decade will probably be in the construction, development, and enhancement of industrial and commercial properties. These were areas often ignored in the past, but local lawmakers see them as necessary steps in the progressive growth of their community in the near future. Some popular local attractions are the historic Brookfield Playhouse, the Di Graza Vineyard and Winery and the Brookfield Craft Center. The playhouse offers five shows each season ranging from dramas to comedies to musicals. The Vineyard and Winery offers guided tours and wine tasting events throughout the year. The Craft Center houses a craft school renowned for its innovative classes and workshops, including such specialized fields as boat and house building. The creative works of local artisans are continuously exhibited in the center’s art gallery and many of the pieces are those crafted by local glassblowers, metal smiths, weavers and potters.

Besides the outdoor recreational activities afforded to residents by Candlewood Lake, Brookfield inhabitants can also play and take refuge in the peace and tranquility of nearby Squantz Pond State Park. The park includes many picnic areas, beach and swimming areas, hiking trails, and concession stands. For those requiring more than awe-inspiring beauty, an hour-long trip into New York City is an attractive solution. Shopping on famed 5th Avenue, attending a play on or off Broadway, enjoying a musical at Radio City Music Hall, or watching a major sporting event live await big city enthusiasts. New York is home to MLB’s Yankees and Mets, NFL’s Giants and Jets and NBA’s Knicks. These opportunities and more await those who make the drive south.

Back home, the traditional feel of a New England atmosphere has been maintained through proper planning and zoning laws designed and enforced to guide orderly development and growth. Brookfield provides outstanding educational facilities for their students, helping to mold today’s youth into tomorrow’s leaders. With the presence of strong community leaders and the emergence of educated and motivated children, these towns and their residents understand their history and embrace their future. This town offers a unique living experience and would make for a wonderful home environment. So, when considering a move to southwestern Connecticut, consider the beauty and ease found in the community of Brookfield.
